Samsung, Western Digital, and Phison simultaneously announce their first PCIe 6.0 SSDs, with announced sequential read speeds between 20 and 24 GB/s — twice the speed of today's best PCIe 5.0 drives.

Compatibility and Availability

PCIe 6.0 requires a compatible motherboard, expected in mainstream in 2027 with Intel Arrow Lake-S and AMD next-gen AGESA platforms. Until then, these SSDs will run in PCIe 5.0 mode on current systems.

  • Samsung 990 Pro 2 PCIe 6.0: available Q4 2026 from €249
  • WD Black SN870: Q1 2027, capacities up to 8TB
  • Phison E31T controller: base of the upcoming Corsair MP800 Pro

The impact will be felt primarily in professional use (video post-production, local AI/ML) and future games using DirectStorage 2.0.
